MOST ACCESSIBLE ART STUDIO
TO JOIN OPEN STUDIOS TOUR THIS WEEKEND
Independence Art Studio (IAS), located in the basement of 714 Market Street, will be the first art studio for people with disabilities included in the Philadelphia Open Studio Tour in Center City East on October 3-4. The most accessible and innovative art studio in Center City Philadelphia, IAS is a professional design/arts studio specifically created for adult artists with and without disabilities.
Over 100 emerging and established artists with disabilities have participated in classes and seminars held in the Independence Art Studio this year alone. Exhibiting work for the first time this weekend as part of 10th Annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tours, pieces including scarves, textiles and watercolors will be displayed and available for purchase. Several of the artists will be present, along with the instructors. Any proceeds raised are split between the artist and the Independence Art Studio.
Founded with the belief that art has the power to transform lives, the Independence Art Studio opened in 2007 under the direction of artist Barbara Gregson and Liberty Resources, Inc., Philadelphia’s Center for Independent Living. Classes and workshops at IAS have included wheelchair art, textile design, painting and printmaking. Classes and workshops for adults and children with disabilities will begin again in October.
